15 best Android games of 2016

best Android gamesGaming on mobile has been improving at a far greater rate than any technology that came before it. In 2005, if you had told anyone that you could play Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on a telephone with the same graphics as it had on a PS2, you probably would’ve been laughed out of the building. Now there are games that look and play even better than that! Without further delay, here are the best Android games available right now!

Asphalt 8: Airborne

[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
To date, there have been few racing games with the longevity of Asphalt 8: Airborne. The game contains a metric ton of content, including a single player campaign, multi-player races, time trials, unlockable content, and consistent updates that add new tracks and other new content. The graphics are pretty decent and the game should work on most devices. There are plenty of racers, but Asphalt 8 hits more of those sweet spots than any of its competitors. At least for right now.

BADLAND best android gamesBADLAND

[Price: Free / $3.99]
BADLAND doesn’t seem like much at first. It’s a side-scrolling runner where you must avoid obstacles and keep the ever-scrolling screen from swallowing you whole. However, once you dig into this game, it’s difficult to deny it’s depth. There is a real-time multiplayer (including local co-op mode), a sizable adventure mode, and updates toward the end of 2015 even let players create their own levels. In a land where time wasters get boring very quickly, this one seems to just keep going.

clash of clans best android gamesClash of Clans

[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
A lot of people don’t like Clash of Clans, but a lot more people do and for good reason. Clash of Clans may be the most popular and well established multiplayer game in the entire mobile gaming industry. There is a single player story and it’s kind of short, but the multiplayer aspect includes clans, clan wars, plenty of stuff to upgrade, and more. The online community is vibrant with a ton of YouTube videos and guides on how to play and it strikes that balance between a time wasting mobile game and a title you can really sink your teeth into.

fallout shelter best android gamesFallout Shelter

[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
Fallout Shelter was released in 2015 to fantastic fanfare and generally positive reviews. In this game, you must build a fallout shelter (roll credits), populate it with people, and then manage everything so that it runs well. You’ll have to send dwellers out into the wastelands for supplies and fend off bad guys trying to kill everybody. You can make babies, create entire communities, and all kinds of stuff. It has substantial depth and it’s a game you can easily play for months before you even realize it has in-app purchases.

geometry wars 3 dimenstions best android gamesGeometry Wars 3: Dimensions

[Price: $9.99]
The Geometry Wars series has quite a sizable fanbase and has been consistently described as one of the most enjoyable indie games ever made. Geometry Wars 3 continues that proud tradition by introducing 3D maps constructed out of various shapes to make the game more challenging. It features 100 levels, 12 battle modes, and it’s all played over 15 3D grids. As per the norm, you’ll have super abilities and all of the HD, colorful explosions that your brain can handle. $9.99 may seem pricey for a mobile game, but there are also no in-app purchases.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas best android gamesGrand Theft Auto: San Andreas

[Price: $6.99]
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is pretty much what every gamer could ask for on mobile. As with most Grand Theft Auto games, it comes with an open world to explore, dozens of hours of game play, decent graphics, a story line, and plenty of stuff to do. Rockstar Games also included controller support, graphics settings, and cloud save support to put a bow on a pretty awesome little package. It’s a gigantic game and best of all, there are no in-app purchases.

hearthstone best android gamesHearthstone Heroes of Warcraft

[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
Hearthstone Heroes of Warcraft flew on to the scene in late 2014 and has been a staple of mobile gaming ever since. It’s a concept that is similar to games like Pokemon or Magic: The Gathering where you collect cards, build decks, and the duel other players using those decks. There are some offline components but the game is pretty much always online. You can also engage with cloud saving via battle.net which will allow you to play the game on your PC or mobile device interchangeably.

Kingdom Rush Origins best android gamesKingdom Rush Origins

[Price: $2.99 with in-app purchases]
All of the Kingdom Rush games are pretty good but the most recent title is Kingdom Rush Origins. This is a tower defense game with a fantasy theme where you must build towers and deploy heroes to defend against hoards of bad guys. Towers and heroes all have their individual perks and can be updated as you progress. Kingdom Rush isn’t an overly complex game, but it’s an all around solid and enjoyable experience. The game is $2.99 with in-app purchases which is an admittedly bold move, but you can make it to the end without using the in-app purchases.

Minecraft best android gamesMinecraft: Pocket Edition

[Price: $6.99]
Minecraft is a popular game all around the world for people of all ages. For those who have never played, Minecraft puts you in a giant world where you mine stuff, build stuff, beat up bad guys, and do pretty much whatever you want. There is a survival mode where you must mine your own resources and food along with a creative mode that gives you unlimited everything. Updates at the end of 2015 added in Redstone which allows you to create even more fun stuff. There are also no in-app purchases.

soul calibur best android gamesSOULCALIBUR

[Price: $13.99]
SOULCALIBUR is one of the more recognizable and popular fighting franchises on consoles. The original title has been ported to Android with great success. It contains improved graphics from the original, Google Play Games services (achievements and leaderboards), and various game modes such as time attack, survival, arcade, and the excessively difficult extra survival. The on-screen controls work surprisingly well and it all adds up to arguably the best fighting game experience on mobile. The price is a little steep but there are no in-app purchases.

final fantasy 4 best android gamesSquare Enix games

Square Enix is one of the few “big name” developers that took mobile gaming seriously from the start and they have some of the best Android games available anywhere. Hitman: Sniper, the original Tomb Raider, and Lara Croft GO round out a decent selection of puzzle games. You have Heavenstrike Rivals and Final Fantasy Tactics: WotL for tactical RPGs, Secret of Mana for an action RPG, and the Deus Ex series for strategy shooter enthusiasts. It’s a huge collection of games and most of them are really good. Square Enix actually has two developer pages on Google Play. It features great graphics, over 300 missions to complete with boss fights, various weapons and things to unlock and upgrade, online PvP mode, and the graphics get even better if you’re using a Tegra X1 device. Yes, it’s a freemium game but it’s a definitely a good one.

TOP 10 MOST POPULAR TORRENT SITES OF 2016

At the start of 2016 KickassTorrents is pulling in most traffic followed by The Pirate Bay. A lot of things have happened over the past year, with some torrent sites disappearing from the scene and others taking their place.

Most file-sharers are creatures of habit, but when their favorite site disappears they gladly hop over to the next one.
This is also reflected in our annual top 10 torrent sites with the most traffic, which sees the usual names on top but also features some dubious newcomers.
One of the major changes came with the hostile takeover of the popular TV-torrent site EZTV. This prompted the popular TV-torrent distribution group to shut down last May. Another group took over the popular brand and continued with their own ‘unofficial’ EZTV releases. We therefore marked the site as a newcomer.
Something similar happened to YIFY’s YTS website, when its New Zealand-based admin ran into legal trouble. The official YTS website shut down but it was quickly replaced by the “unofficial” YTS.ag, which gathered a large user-base over the past two months.
Apparently, most torrent users are happy as long as they can get their fix, no matter what the source is.
KickassTorrents (KAT) remains the most visited torrent site and continues to grow. The Pirate Bay is listed in second place and made a strong comeback after nearly two months of downtime spanning the turn of the year. Since the site has been operating from several domain names until a few days ago, we chose not to list an Alexa rank.
Finally, it’s worth noting that Rutracker would have made it into the top five based on the number of visitors. However, we choose to only include English language content sites.
Below is the full list of the top 10 most-visited torrent sites at the start of the new year. The list is based on various traffic reports and we display the Alexa rank for each. In addition, we include last year’s ranking for each of the 10 sites.
MOST POPULAR TORRENT SITES

1. KICKASSTORRENTS

KickassTorrents was founded in 2009 and surpassed The Pirate Bay in traffic last year. Battling various censorship efforts the site has burned through a few different domain names over the years. Most recently it switched to a Costa Rican .cr domain after it lost its Somalian .so address.

ALEXA RANK: 85 / LAST YEAR #1

2. THE PIRATE BAY

The Pirate Bay is one of the main piracy icons. The torrent site wasn’t online at the beginning of 2015 and had to deal with a staff revolt. However, it quickly regained millions of users after a successful comeback operating from a hydra of domain names until last week.

ALEXA RANK: NA / COMPETE RANK: NA / LAST YEAR #4

3. EXTRATORRENT

ExtraTorrent continues to gain more traffic and has become one of the most active torrent communities. The site is also the home of the popular ETTV and ETRG release groups.

ALEXA RANK: 342 / LAST YEAR #3

4. TORRENTZ

Torrentz has been the leading BitTorrent meta-search engine for many years. Unlike the other sites featured in the list Torrentz does not host any torrent files or magnet links, but redirects visitors to other places on the web. The site uses several domain names with .eu being the most popular.

ALEXA RANK: 351 / LAST YEAR #2

5. RARBG

RARBG, which started out as a Bulgarian tracker, was last year’s newcomer and continues to rake in more visitors. The site was blocked by UK ISPs last year, which put it on par with most other sites in the top 10.

ALEXA RANK: 1,101 / LAST YEAR #7

6. 1337X

1337x has traditionally been a community driven torrent site but several weeks ago most of the admins and moderators abandoned ship over security concerns. The coming year it will become clear whether 1337x can keep its popular status.

ALEXA RANK: 1,249 / LAST YEAR #9

7. EZTV.AG

TV-torrent distribution group EZTV shut down earlier this year after a hostile takeover. The site continued to operate under new ownership and releases its own torrents now. In solidarity with the original owners several large torrent sites have banned these ‘new’ releases from their sites.

ALEXA RANK: 1,373 / LAST YEAR #NA

8. TORRENTHOUND

TorrentHound has been around since the last decade but is a newcomer in the top 10. It has also been on the radar of copyright holders this year. The torrent site is blocked in several countries and was reported as a piracy haven to the U.S. government, alongside many other sites in this list.

ALEXA RANK: 2,239 / LAST YEAR #NA

9. YTS.AG

YTS.ag has nothing to do with the original YTS or YIFY group, but aims to take its place. As with the new EZTV, several large torrent sites are not allowing the group to use the YIFY or YTS brands on their sites.

ALEXA RANK: 740 / COMPETE RANK: 4,271 / LAST YEAR #NA

10. TORRENTDOWNLOADS

TorrentDownloads has been around for several years. The torrent site regained a spot in the top 10 this year after it was featured for the last time in 2011. It’s a no-nonsense index that provides torrents to millions of users each month.

ALEXA RANK: 2,969 / LAST YEAR #NA

Alexa isn’t perfect and that Compete has plenty of flaws, but when combined both do a pretty good job at comparing sites that operate in a similar niche.

Predicting The Top 10 Highest Grossing Movies Of 2016

2016 is not going to be the box office bonanza 2015 was, and that's an expectation we need to get out of the way right from the start. But, as with any year, there are going to be 10 films that rise above the rest to theatrical glory. And we here at Cinema Blend, like a bunch of box office analysts who've watched Moneyball one too many times, are going to try and rank the films of 2016 in order of their financial worth.

10. Alice Through The Looking Glass

Release Date: May 27, 2016
Worldwide Box Office Guess: $488 Million
Reason: Alice In Wonderland, through some sort of dark magic and appropriate marketing, managed to cross $1 Billion mark 5 years ago. With that much time passing between installments, and the change in directors from Tim Burton to James Bobin, there's tons of doubt that Alice Through The Looking Glass will be as lucky the second time around. But there may be enough magic left in the public's eyes that the film could just barely edge into the year's top 10 standings. If there were ever a film we were intending to keep a keen eye on throughout the year, it'd be this one.

9. Star Trek Beyond

Release Date: July 22, 2016
Worldwide Box Office Guess: $496 Million
Reason: Star Trek has been a successful film franchise for quite some time now, but it really hasn't found itself real high up on the top 10 since the franchise's reboot in 2009. Seeing as the first film in the reboot only got as high as 7th in the box office standings, and the second film didn't even place in the top 10, we're a little bearish on Star Trek Beyond's standings at this year's box office. The novelty of Justin Lin becoming the first helmer to take the franchise out since J.J. Abrams is both a draw, as well as a push for audiences even remotely interested in the U.S.S. Enterprise's ongoing mission.

8. Suicide Squad

Release Date: August 5, 2016
Worldwide Box Office Guess: $535 Million
Reason: Spinoffs are going to have their day in box office court this year, as Star Wars and now DC Comics are experimenting with side stories to help sweeten their box office returns. While the healthy degree of skepticism behind Suicide Squad'spotential success will handicap the film a little bit at the multiplex, there's no doubt that the morbid curiousity of fans far and wide is more of an asset than a liability. It won't be the second coming, but it'll probably be enough to keep fans entertained until the next DC Comics picture.

7. X-Men: Apocalypse

Release Date: May 27th, 2016
Worldwide Box Office Guess:$630 Million
Reason: With X-Men: Days Of Future Past proving to be a huge hit for the folks at 20th Century Fox last year, X-Men: Apocalypse was always going to be on this list. Unfortunately, there's one small problem when it comes to the latest entry in the saga of Professor Xavier and his school of gifted youngsters: the box office might be a bit split that weekend. Alice Through The Looking Glass is being released on the same day, and since both films have fan bases with little, but substantial overlap, you can expect both films to take a ding in their opening weekend. However, there's no question that this will be the film to come out on top in the end.

6. Independence Day: Resurgence

Release Date: June 24, 2016
Worldwide Box Office Guess: $654 Million
Reason: Reviving a 20 year old franchise isn't easy. Just ask Joseph Kosinski, the man behind the film that should have been a contender, Tron: Legacy. Cross this factor with jumping into a new film directed by Roland Emmerich, and you can see where we find ourselves fearing that Independence Day: Resurgence may be a big turkey. Though, to be fair, the Independence Day name still holds up quite well with audiences. And like it or not, the original film helped define the modern box office blockbuster back in 1996. There's a good chance that this old dog still has some tricks up its sleeve.

5. Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

Release Date: November 18, 2016
Worldwide Box Office Guess: $730 Million
Reason: Harry Potter has been gone from our screens for four years, yet the fondness for the franchise has not dulled. With Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them poising itself to become the series' worthy successor, it's going to have big shoes to fill. Our guess is that while it'll come close, it'll still be a little shy of filling them completely, seeing as this is a brand new character and an original storyline that we've never seen before. We're cautiously optimistic, but we'll be there opening night.

4. Finding Dory

Release Date: June 17, 2016
Worldwide Box Office Guess:$836 Million
Reason: Nostalgia rules yet again! With Finding Nemo being a box-office heavyweight back in its day, Finding Dory will assuredly continue the Pixar brand of excellence. However, the potential success of this film will be tempered by the fairly tepid response to the marketing materials thus far. While some fans don't think there should be a sequel to the 2003 legend, there's still a good amount of fans (and their kids) ready to just keep swimming to the box office. Expect repeat business from this one.

3. Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice

Release Date: March 25, 2016
Worldwide Box Office Guess: $865 Million
Reason: While Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice has its share of detractors, it does have the advantage of being released a fair amount of time before Captain America: Civil War. In the space between the two films, Zack Snyder's prelude toWonder Woman will have plenty of time to rack up a healthy box office gross. Better still, competition isn't as stiff as it was last year, giving the battle of the world's finest enough breathing room to raise the DC Cinematic Universe's box office profile.

2. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Release Date: December 16, 2016
Worldwide Box Office Guess:$890 Million
Reason: Star Wars. Now that we have your attention, you can see how we think this is going to be one of the biggest hits of the year. With Gareth Edwards making some big league money with Godzilla last year, his heat in the director's chair could take the Star Wars brand into a magnificent showing outside of the standard episodic storyline. It probably won't hit the heights Star Wars: The Force Awakens has scaled this year, but it'll more than likely prove that the spin-off films will be a nice source of side income in the off season.

1. Captain America: Civil War

Release Date: May 6, 2016
Worldwide Box Office Guess: $1.3 Billion
Reason: If there's any film that could beat the long awaited Captain America: Civil War, then you're welcome to point it out to us. Between the clash of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers' opposing ideologies, and the fact that this is shaping up to be theAvengers flick we wished we got last year, The Russo Brothers have a money printer on their hands. Not only is the box office pre-loaded for this flick, but it's also got the potential to be the highest grossing Captain America film ever. And that sits with us just fine.

The Top 10 Destinations on Our 2016 Travel List

This the season to look ahead to another year of travel, and here at AFAR, we aren’t above fantasizing about where to spend our 2016 vacation days. But our Where to Go package is not just a list of top destinations for travelers to cross off their bucket list. Instead, these places are on our radar as they fit a certain criteria: better tourism infrastructure—a new hotel, a new direct flight, or a new cruise or train route—that makes it easier to visit; an event worth traveling for; strong value; or emerging cultural scenes.
At AFAR, we believe the number of stamps in your passport does not determine your status as a traveler. What matters is the depth of experiences you have while traveling the world—and what they do to transform you as a global citizen. We’re proud of this year’s list and hope that all travelers will strive to have deeper, richer, and more fulfilling experiences that continue to evolve as the world changes around us.
While we don’t subscribe to the idea of a bucket list, there are destinations that are on our hearts and minds right now. Places like Nepal, which continues to recover from last year’s earthquake, thanks in part to tourism dollars. Or Tasmania, which is experiencing a luxury travel boom. Or the American Southwest, where travelers can celebrate the National Parks centennial with a road trip through the region’s most unique parks.
Here are the places we can’t wait to explore in the new year.

Angel's Landing in Zion National Park

1) American Southwest: There’s no better place to celebrate the National Parks centennial than in the American southwest. Home to Arches, Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon, and Capitol Reef National Parks—most of which will roll out special programming to celebrate the big anniversary—the region is made for an early spring road trip that weaves in stops at such growing cities as Flagstaff.

2) Nepal: Tourism is more important than ever for the country as it recovers from the devastating earthquake in April that claimed 9,000 lives and affected millions of others. Travel dipped by 50 percent following the quake. Intrepid Travel, one of the country’s largest tour operators, recently collaborated with the Nepalese government and a team of experts to assess the damage. The conclusion: This landscape of snowy Himalayan peaks and jungle-covered plains is secure and ready for visitors to return. And your dollars will likely directly fund relief efforts.

3) Tasmania: Tasmania is heating up amidst an emerging tourism infrastructure and top hoteliers from around the world are taking note. The area will see new cruise lines and hiking trails in 2016, such as the new Three Capes Track, a 28 mile hike that takes four days to hike and a new Tasmania cruise from Coral Expeditions.

4) Cuba: With the recent ease in American travel restrictions to Cuba, 2016 marks the perfect time to visit the island—especially as tourism is likely to greatly change the country in the years ahead. A new weekend tour from Insight Cuba will also roll out in January, making it even easier for Americans to get a taste of the island without taking too many vacation days.

5) Portugal: Portugal is heating up as a cultural hub. Foodies are flocking to the capital city of Lisbon, which is radiating with exciting new culinary experiences. In addition, the city is getting a swanky new port hub to support the building river cruise traffic. Porto has quickly emerged as a top art scene and the central coast 200-mile stretch between the two cities is becoming loved by beachcombers. Locals and newcomers alike are breathing new life into Portugal’s smaller villages. With these experiences, Portugal truly has something for everyone.

6) Granada, Nicaragua: Granada is quickly becoming the Portland of Nicaragua, with coffee tourism on the rise and new cafes popping up throughout the area. In addition, travelers can take advantage of easy outdoorsy half-day trips, like Las Islets in Lake Nicaragua or the Mombacho Volcano.

7) Mongolia: Until recently, Mongolia really required “roughing it.” There was no luxury hotel in the fascinating East-meets-West capital of Ulaanbaatar, let alone in the wild big-sky country beyond. Now, however, a Shangri-La opened in the capital, the country’s wilderness lodges have upped their comforts, and expert outfitters like Nomadic Expeditions arrange trips that don’t sacrifice luxury for authenticity.

8) East Africa: The Safari landscape is heating up in Tanzania and Zimbabwe. In Tanzania, a new fleet of tented safari camps means you can get closer to nature than ever before—without sacrificing luxury. And with a new airport, a stable political climate, and new resorts, Zimbabwe has emerged as a safari destination to be reckoned with.

9) Cabo: As it rebuilds following last year’s Hurricane Odile, Cabo is shedding its party reputation and reinventing itself as a luxury destination. In the last year, the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula has seen an abundance of development, including the arrival of many top name resorts and luxurious new offerings, like Esperanza, One & Only Palmilla, or Las Ventanas. The food is also just as good, thanks to celebrity chef migrations, including Enrique Olvera at Manta.

10) Ireland: Rounding out the list, Ireland is a top destination to visit in 2016 as the country has recently launched a number of travel services that allow its diversity of scenery and terrain to be seen by land, sea and air. The first luxury rail, the Belmond Grand Hibernian, launched in the fall of this year and Linblad will roll out an Ireland boat tour in the months ahead. In addition, award-winning travel company, Black Tomato enables travelers to fly West of Ireland over the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare.
